files/project/amber/images/mugshot_MTS-1.JPGMaria-Theresia Schafmeister

Prof. Dr. Maria-Th. Schafmeister is head of the Hydrogeology Research group at Greifswald University.
Her main field of interest is the modeling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport and the assessment of water budget parameters as well as groundwater quality, especially for changing climate conditions. Being situated at the shores of the Baltic her research is focused on coastal aquifers, at the Baltic or in Vietnam. As main working tool she applies spatial (geostats) and multivariate statistical methods to describe aquifer heterogeneities, to build 3d-models and to quantify uncertainties of predictions.
Her research group comprises 3 scientists and 2 technicians. The laboratories include analytical techniques (e.g. Laser-ICP, XRF, AAS etc.), field devices (drilling, probing, GPR, geoelectrics) and computer techniques (groundwater modeling, geostats, GIS).
Maria-Theresia serves as Managing Editor of Hydrogeology Journal within the IAH (International Association of Hydrogeologists), she is vice president of the German Hydrogeology society (FH-DGG). She also serves in the Kuratorium of Alfred-Wegener-Institute.
