University formal issues

1. Enrolment for PhD courses at the University of Rostock (source: University of Rostock)

For enrolling as a PhD student at the University of Rostock and having previously studied at another university (national or international), you must submit an application (Application for admission to German university for international applicants with foreign academic qualification). Applications can be submitted at any time.

The following documents must be submitted to the Student Service Center of the University of Rostock:

fully completed and signed application form (German version, English version)
officially certified copies of your (school) certificates that entitle you to study at a university in your home country with an officially certified copy of the German or English translation
officially certified copies of all university certificates and diplomas in the national language and in a German or English translation
confirmation from the doctoral supervisor
Registration of doctoral candidates (German, English)
Application for enrolment (German only) and its supplement form (German only)

Please do not staple the documents and submit them in a minimum size of A5.

A confirmation of the receipt of documents is generally only given if a postcard enclosed, franked and addressed as confirmation of receipt.

The submitted documents will be destroyed after processing. Therefore, in your own interest, do not send original documents, only officially certified copies.

The translations of certificates must be in German or English. The following agencies can translate the documents officially:

Alphatrad Germany GmbH
Intertext Foreign Language Service e.G.

You do not need an apostille for enrolment, but an official authentication.

If the translation has been certified by is sworn translators these documents will be accepted. Translations by translators who are not sworn are not accepted. However, please do not submit the original translation, but a copy of it. The copy must then be officially approved and certified by a public service (citizens' registration office, human ressources, etc.) for German translations or a notary for English translations.

2. Semester ticket

After having registered and enrolled at the University of Rostock you will receive a semester ticket, that at the moment costs 215,50 Euro and includes the also the ticket for the regional public transport for one semester, reduced prices at the canteen, etc.

3. Equivalence of degrees

Please check in advance if your degrees are equivalent to the ones from the University of Rostock.
If not, you might have to take courses. You can already check yourself on the anabin website, an information portal covering foreign educational achievements, if your degrees are equivalent. Your supervisor, secretary or latest the Student Service Center will help you with the website that is only available in German.

4. Application for admission

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNF) has set up a "Guide to doctorate procedure at the MNF" This is a very helpful document for organising your dissertation and stay in Rostock.

Note: By the time for applying for admission you will AGAIN need official certified copies and translations of your degrees.

5. German language course

According to the PhD regulations you also need a certification for German language (i.e. language course). The level of knowledge is not specified (see the attached file). You can take courses at the university (https://www.sprachenzentrum.uni-rostock.de/)

Also the IOW offers German courses during working hours. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic the courses might take place irregularly. Please contact your supervisor.
